Jacobean Ruff is a UK folk group from Leeds, formed in late 2011 and active since 2011. The band consists of five friends: Scott Bulmer on percussion, Aaron Collins-Wood on bass and mandolin, Sophie Elmieh on vocals and bass, Sophie Pearson on vocals, guitar and banjo, and Jed Timms on guitar and violin. The current lineup is in place from June 2012.
Style and instrumentation
Jacobean Ruff develops a modern folk sound built around acoustic instruments and vocal harmonies. As their style evolves, the group adds mandolin, banjo, violin and occasional melodica to support the direction of the music. Their sound is described as a mix of traditional folk influences and pop songwriting.
Performances and recognition
The band plays established Leeds venues including Oporto, the Brudenell, Nation of Shopkeepers and the Hop. They also appear on the festival circuit, with performances at Beacons, Live At Leeds and Tockwith Festival.
Broadcasts
Their song “Family” is selected for airplay on BBC Radio 1 in January 2013 through BBC Introducing.
