Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan is a collaboration between Scottish musician Isobel Campbell and American singer Mark Lanegan. Campbell is known as the former cellist and backing vocalist in Belle & Sebastian and as the leader of The Gentle Waves. Lanegan, born in 1964 and died in 2022, is known for fronting the Seattle grunge band Screaming Trees and for working with Queens of the Stone Age, Mad Season, Desert Sessions, the Mark Lanegan Band and Black Phoebe. He also forms part of The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli and releases solo albums.
Releases
The pair release a series of albums built around the contrast between Campbell’s softer voice and Lanegan’s rougher singing style. Their first album, Ballad of the Broken Seas, receives a Mercury Prize nomination in 2006. They follow it with Sunday at Devil Dirt, which appears in 2008, and Hawk, released in 2010. In the same year they also issue the live album Live at the Barbican London 2010.
Style
The collaboration sits across folk, singer-songwriter, indie and alternative music, with the fuller genre range also including acoustic rock, alternative rock, americana, contemporary folk, folk rock and indie rock.
