Instra:mental

Instra:mental is a drum and bass group made up of Alex Green and Damon Kirkham. The act is also known for work under the names Boddika and Jon Convex, and develops a sound that spans drum and bass, dubstep, drumfunk and atmospheric electronic music, with a range of tempos and styles.

Career

The pair begin with early releases on Soul:r and Darkestral, then build a profile through singles on labels including Exit and Naked Lunch. Their recordings are noted for crossing genre boundaries within bass music, and they establish themselves through a run of influential releases rather than a single breakout track.

Instra:mental also forms studio partnerships with Jonny L, Skream, Burial and dBridge. With dBridge, the duo hosts the Autonomic podcast series, which becomes a significant part of their output and profile.

Label, radio and club work

The group launches the label NonPlus+ and takes on residencies for Fabric and Rinse FM. These activities place them within both club culture and broadcast radio, alongside their release schedule.

Recognition and performances

Instra:mental is nominated for Best Breakthrough Producers in DJ Magazine’s Best of British awards in 2009. The group also performs internationally, including appearances at festivals in Croatia and Sardinia, and tours Japan.
