Insect Heroes
Insect Heroes are a Glasgow group made up of brothers George and Evan Thomas, joined by Robin Ashton, Adam Campbell and Laurie Pitt. Their line-up includes modular synthesiser, keytar, banjo, drums and percussion, giving the music a distinctly varied instrumental character.
Style and sound
The band describes itself as “Tropical Pop for the Apocalypse”. Its music is rooted in psychedelic pop, but it also draws on rhythmic oddities, strong percussion and contrasting tempos, moving between slow, chugging passages and faster bursts. George Thomas provides vocals, which are described as intimate and direct, and at times his singing has an old-style crooner quality.
Debut album
Their debut album, Apocalypso, receives a full release in 2014. The record includes tracks such as “Bang Bang Bang”, “Beautiful World”, “Strobe Lights” and “Autobahn”. Across these songs the band draws on different reference points, including 1970s Serge Gainsbourg, the Velvet Underground, the Beach Boys’ Wild Honey period and Ennio Morricone.
