In Tua Nua

In Tua Nua is an Irish pop-rock group from County Dublin, Ireland, active from 1982 to 1990. The name roughly translates from Irish as “in the new land”. The group forms around Leslie Dowdall, Jack Dublin, Vinny Kilduff, Ivan O'Shea, Martin Clancy, Paul Byrne and Steve Wickham in the early 1980s. Its membership also includes Aingeala de Burca, Brian O'Briain, Lovely Previn and Matt Spalding.

Style and formation

The band develops a sound that combines an early Roxy Music-style rock ambition with folk and traditional Irish elements. This blend includes uillean pipes, acoustic guitars, vocals and electronic violin.

Recordings

In Tua Nua first releases the Island Records single “Take My Hand”, which is co-written by Sinéad O'Connor. It follows this with “Somebody To Love”. After signing to Virgin Records, the band releases “Seven Into the Sea”, one of its best-known recordings.

Albums

The debut album Vaudeville appears in 1987. The follow-up album The Long Acre appears in 1988 and includes the radio hits “All I Wanted” and “Don’t Fear Me Now”, as well as the single “Wheel Of Evil”.

Reception

The group achieves a degree of success and recognition in Ireland and across Europe during the late 1980s.
