Ikonika

Ikonika is the performance name of Sara Abdel-Hamid, a London-based electronic musician, producer and DJ. She is associated with Hyperdub Records and with dubstep, while her wider work also sits across afro house, amapiano, bassline, breakbeat, breaks and club music.

Career

She begins releasing music in 2008 with the 12-inch Please/Simulacrum on Hyperdub. She also releases music on Planet Mu and appears on a remix of DJ Mujava’s Township Funk, issued by Warp Records. Her debut album, Contact, Love, Want, Have, also appears on Hyperdub in 2010.

Style

Her music combines melodic synthesiser lines, driving drum programming, melancholic sub-bass and unusual song structures. She is described as part of the male-dominated dubstep scene, with music that mixes heavy bass with more playful, melodic elements.
