If These Trees Could Talk

If These Trees Could Talk are an instrumental post-rock band from Akron, United States. The group is active from 2000 and consists of Tom Fihe on bass, Jeff Kalal on guitar, Cody Kelly on guitar, Zack Kelly on drums, and Mike Socrates on guitar.

Style and sound

The band’s music draws on post-rock, math rock, and heavier post-metal influences. It uses reverb and delay, and combines dreamy and atmospheric passages with more direct, riff-led sections. Their songs are often described as shorter and more immediate than those of many post-rock acts, while still using layered melodies, waves of guitar parts, tremolo-picked leads, and complex, energetic drumming.

Their debut EP reflects the influence of Hydra Head and Neurot-style releases, while also sharing common ground with bands such as Pink Floyd and King Crimson and other progressive rock groups.

Recordings

Their debut album, Above the Earth, Below the Sky, is released in 2009. Red Forest follows in 2012 and is self-released, with vinyl handled by Science of Silence Records. Their third full-length album, The Bones of a Dying World, is released in 2016.

Line-up

The group features three guitarists, which is central to its layered approach: Jeff Kalal, Cody Kelly and Mike Socrates. Tom Fihe plays bass, and Zack Kelly plays drums.
