Iceage

Iceage is a Danish punk band from Copenhagen, active since 2008. The group consists of Elias Rønnenfelt, Johan Suurballe Wieth, Jakob Tvilling Pless and Dan Kjær Nielsen. Their early work is rooted in abrasive punk rock and post-hardcore, while later releases broaden the group’s sound with more varied instrumentation, arrangement and atmosphere.

Early years and first releases

The band forms in 2008, with the four members already long-time friends. Their first release is a self-titled EP in 2009. Iceage’s debut album, New Brigade, follows in 2011 on Tambourhinoceros Records. The record presents a hard-edged, cold and Joy Division-influenced sound that establishes the band’s early style.

Album releases and stylistic change

Iceage’s second album, You’re Nothing, appears in 2013 and leads to a release on Matador Records. In 2014, the band releases Plowing into the Field of Love through Matador, introducing horns, keyboards and acoustic guitars and moving toward a more dynamic and eclectic approach while keeping a dark tone. Beyondless follows in 2018 and continues that development.

Later work

Seek Shelter arrives in 2021 and is the band’s first album with external production, handled by Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3. The following year, Iceage issues Shake the Feeling: Outtakes & Rarities 2015-2021, a collection of tracks from different periods in the band’s history that do not appear on the main albums.

Related project

Elias Rønnenfelt also works in Marching Church, a side project that influences Iceage’s later material. Between Iceage albums, he releases two records with that project.
