IAMX

IAMX is the solo project of Chris Corner, who is also known for his work in Sneaker Pimps. It is an electronic and synth-pop act associated with alternative, electroclash and trip-hop, and Corner presents it as separate from his everyday personality, treating it as a kind of performative persona.

Style and themes

The project’s lyrics and imagery often focus on sex, death, narcotic intoxication, bisexuality, obsession, alienation and indirect political references. Its sound combines dramatic synth-rock, dark pop and detailed indie dance elements, with Corner’s vocal style placed at the centre of the music. IAMX is also described through comparisons to 1980s electro-glam, Prince and Roxy Music, reflecting its theatrical and stylised approach.

Career and reception

IAMX originates from Middlesbrough, England, and is currently based in Los Angeles. The project draws strong live responses and performs at festivals across Europe, including in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine. It also shares stages with acts such as Placebo, Franz Ferdinand and The Cardigans.

Releases

Among the best-known IAMX songs are “Spit It Out”, “The Negative Sex” and “President”. The 2011 album Volatile Times includes tracks such as “Bernadette”, “I Salute You Christopher”, “Into the Asylum” and “Commanded by Voices”. Its first single, “Ghosts of Utopia”, also appears in the project’s recorded output from that period.
