Hudson Mohawke

Hudson Mohawke is the performing name of Ross Birchard, an electronic and hip hop producer and DJ from Glasgow, United Kingdom. He is also known as Hud Mo and is associated with the LuckyMe collective. His work spans electronic music, hip hop, instrumental hip hop and wonky.

Early career

Birchard first performs as DJ Itchy, and at 15 he becomes the youngest UK DMC finalist. His early club DJ work takes place through Glasgow Uni’s Subcity Radio, where he appears on the Culture City Kids show and later on other programmes including Turntable Science with Pro Vinylist Karim and Cloudo’s Happy Hardcore show. He adopts the Hudson Mohawke name after seeing it engraved on a statue in the hallway of his accommodation.

Recordings and labels

He signs to Warp Records and G.O.O.D. Music, despite having only a limited number of official releases at that point. Much of his early material circulates online as unofficial tracks and DJ mixes. His first official release to draw major attention is “Free Mo”, which appears on the Ubiquity Records compilation Choices, Vol. 1 in 2007. He also appears as a remixer on Choices, Vol. 2 later that year.

In 2008, his 12-inch EP Ooops!, released on LuckyMe/Wireblock, becomes widely noticed in underground circles. His debut album, Butter, is released in 2009. In 2022, he releases Cry Sugar, an album noted for its dance-oriented and wide-ranging production.

Collaborations and side projects

Hudson Mohawke is part of the groups TNGHT, WitchGang and Heralds of Change. He later works with Charli XCX on her album BRAT, producing “Talk talk” and “Mean girls”.
