Hot Panda

Hot Panda is an indie rock group from Edmonton, Canada, active from 2006 to 2016. It forms in January 2006 after Chris Connelly and Maghan Campbell return from living in Oslo, Norway. The pair, influenced by the Scandinavian music scene, bring in Mike Robertson and Keith Olsen to complete the group.

Style and early releases

The band plays a rowdy mix that draws on pop-oriented indie rock, the raw energy associated with Iggy Pop, and the dancier, gypsy-punk leanings of Gogol Bordello. Its early recording includes the EP The Whale Headed Girl, which it records in Calgary with Diego Medina of Spanish Jewels productions.

Touring and live activity

Hot Panda tours nationally early in its career, including dates in New York City and an opening slot for Art Brut. It also tours eastern Canada and appears at Pop Montreal. Descriptions of the group note collective vocals, jaunty keyboards and prominent guitar work.

Reception

The band is described as a notable emerging Canadian indie-rock act, with attention drawn to its danceable songs and energetic performances.
