Hiss Golden Messenger is an American group from Durham, United States, active since 2007. The act is led by M.C. Taylor, with Scott Hirsch as a long-term mainstay. Other members include Alex Bingham, Chris Boerner, Brad Cook, Phil Cook, Nick Falk, Sam Fribush, Matt McCaughan and M.C. Taylor.

Style and background

The group works across americana, folk, folk rock and rock, and is also described as a folk country band. Its sound draws on improv-rock as associated with Traffic and the Grateful Dead. Taylor and Hirsch both previously played in Ex-Ignota and The Court & Spark.

Recordings

Hiss Golden Messenger issues releases through blackmaps and signed with Merge Records in 2014. Many of its recordings are available via M.C. Taylor’s label, the Heaven & Earth Magic Shop. The group’s albums include Country Hai East Cotton, Bad Debt, Poor Moon, Lord I Love the Rain, Haw, Lateness of Dancers, Heart Like a Levee and Hallelujah Anyhow.
