Hillfolk Noir

Hillfolk Noir is a Boise-based group led by Travis Ward. The project passes through several earlier iterations, including Travis Ward’s solo performances and The Junkyard Bandstand, before taking its current form. The group’s line-up includes Allie Ward, who has remained a constant presence and provides backing vocals; she also plays drums in the later configuration.

Style and development

The band draws on bluegrass and Americana, while also incorporating blues, bottleneck guitar playing and psychedelic elements. Its sound develops from Ward’s earlier solo work into a broader ensemble approach. The group is presented as the latest version of a long-running musical project built around Ward and his collaborators.
