Hi-Fi Spitfires

Hi-Fi Spitfires are a punk group from Sunderland, formed in 2008. The band is made up of Stephen Straughan and Tony Taylor.

The group begins as a three-piece punk rock band formed in mid-2008 by Steve Straughan on guitar and lead vocals, with bassist Dean Liddle and drummer Nelly, who has also played with The Lurkers, Fiend and Hang-Ups. After a short rehearsal period, the band records its first EP, The 11th Hour.

Hi-Fi Spitfires draw on a range of punk influences, including early bands such as The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Slaughter and the Dogs and The Boys, as well as later groups including U.S. Bombs, Bombshell Rocks, District and Rancid. The band’s first album, England Screaming, follows.

The group also plans a split release with Argentinian band Desahogo containing four non-album tracks. In October 2010, it plays its first European shows supporting 999 and Mad Caddies. This is followed by a UK tour with T.V. Smith’s Adverts in March 2011 and a short European tour across five countries in September 2011. Dean Liddle later leaves the band and Neil Newton of the Angelic Upstarts replaces him.
