Heaven & Hell is a heavy metal supergroup from Los Angeles, United States, active from 2006 to 2010. It brings together current and former members of Black Sabbath and is also described as a Black Sabbath/Dio reunion.

Line-up and origins

The group centres on Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, with Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice also part of the project. Bill Ward is listed among the members, although Appice replaces him in the touring line-up. The name is taken from the Black Sabbath album Heaven and Hell, and the project is formed so the musicians can perform material associated with the Dio-era years without being presented as Black Sabbath.

Activity and releases

Heaven & Hell is first announced in 2006 and tours internationally in 2007. The group releases the live CD/DVD Live From Radio City Music Hall, recorded in New York, and later issues its first full-length studio album, The Devil You Know, on Rhino in 2009.

Musical context

The band is associated with doom metal, hard rock, heavy metal and metal. Its line-up is linked to the periods of Black Sabbath that produced the albums Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. A touring keyboardist, Scott Warren of Dio, joins the live set-up, although the new studio tracks do not include keyboards.

Later period

Heaven & Hell plans another world tour beginning in 2009 and has several festival appearances lined up for 2010, but these dates are cancelled after Ronnie James Dio becomes ill. Dio dies in 2010, bringing the project to an end.
