Hana Vu
Hana Vu is an indie rock artist from Los Angeles who writes and records in styles associated with dream pop, indie pop, shoegaze, lo-fi and indie rock. She starts writing songs as a preteen and uploads home recordings to music-sharing sites in her early teens. Her work develops from sparse, bedroom-made recordings into fuller, more arranged releases over the course of the 2010s.
Early releases
Her first collection, Got Got Demos, appears in 2014. The following year, Outtakes presents hazy, moody versions built from combinations of guitar, keyboards, drum machine and multi-tracked vocals. By Nightlife in 2015, she is recording full-band arrangements with live drums.
Albums, collaborations and label debut
Vu’s 2016 album Sensitive includes “Queen of High School”, a collaboration with Willow Smith. Her video for “Crying on the Subway” draws the attention of Chris Cantalini, co-founder of Luminelle Recordings, the Fat Possum imprint, in early 2018. She makes her label debut with the EP How Many Times Have You Driven By, which arrives in 2018. She also tours in the United States in support of the indie pop duo Sales.
Live activity
In April 2018, she opens a show in Los Angeles at the invitation of Soccer Mommy. Based in Los Angeles, she remains associated with a sound that blends dreamy textures, soul and jangle within an indie rock framework.
