Halcyon

Halcyon is the name used by several different acts, including a progressive metal band from Sydney, Australia, and a post-black/progressive metal band from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The name is also used by a Sydney new music ensemble, a Tampa-based group, a solo project from Coventry, Rhode Island, a DJ project based in Serbia, an Illinois two-piece, a Northern Virginia pop-punk/alt rock band, and an indietronica/ambient-electro-pop band from Louisville, Kentucky.

Progressive metal and related acts

The Sydney, Australia, version of Halcyon is a progressive metal band. It makes free tracks available online and releases its debut EP, Pastures, through Bandcamp. Another Halcyon, based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, plays post-black/progressive metal. Its first album, Jerusalem, appears in 2012 and is available as a free download through its Bandcamp page. That release is recorded and mixed by Stuart McKillop at Rain City Recorders and mastered by Jens Bogren.

Other acts using the name

A Tampa, Florida, Halcyon features Deb Hunseder and Steph Callahan on guitars and vocals, with Alvon Griffin on percussion. Its releases include I’m Naked and I’m Going to Paris, Slightly Confusing to Strangers, Two Bars Short of a Hit, Separately Together, and Plugged, Stripped Down & Live.

Another Halcyon is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Sean Hart, based in Coventry, Rhode Island. This version works with guest musicians, is independently produced and managed, and is associated with the experimental/metal album The Drowning Of Ceyx.

A separate Halcyon is a DJ based in Zrenjanin, Serbia, who studies electronic music production and collaborates with Lotus Eater and Soundcuttah of the Soundcutters collective.

Ensemble and band projects

Halcyon also refers to a Sydney-based new music ensemble run by two singers and focused on 20th- and 21st-century contemporary classical music. It has existed for more than a decade and is known for performing technically demanding music with precision.

An Illinois-based Halcyon is a two-piece ensemble whose work draws on influences ranging from hardcore punk to late nineteenth-century Romanticism. It is writing and recording a debut EP titled A Tabula Rasa.

Halcyon Days, from Northern Virginia, plays pop-punk and alt rock in the style of Daylight, Balance and Composure, Title Fight, and The Pillows. It releases a first EP online.

The Louisville, Kentucky, Halcyon is an indietronica and ambient-electro-pop band formed by sisters Sarah and Rachel Hall. Its first single is a demo of El Pueblo, and its self-produced debut EP, 1932, is released on Bandcamp.
