Gypsy Dave Smith is an Australian dobro blues guitarist born in 1955. He leaves Australia in his twenties and settles in Newcastle, UK, where he finds a musical home after travelling from Newcastle, Australia.
He plays in an authentic picking style associated with old-style blues guitar and draws on the sound and approach of artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Mississippi John Hurt. A 1933 dobro becomes part of his story and he becomes known for a life shaped by the influence of Robert Johnson.
Smith is a regular presence at festivals across Europe, including the Tartan Heart Festival, and appears as musician in residence at the Jazz Cafe in Newcastle on many Thursday nights. He is also active in venues around Newcastle and within the UK blues scene more broadly.
