Gurrumul is the stage name of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, a Gumatj man from Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island in the Northern Territory. He is a folk singer whose work is rooted in Yolŋu language and story, and he sings in Gaalpu, Gumatj and Djambarrpuynu, as well as in English.

Born blind, he is left-handed and teaches himself guitar using a right-handed instrument given to him by his mother. His songs draw on his land and cultural background, and his solo work brings him wider recognition.

Before his solo career, he performs with Yothu Yindi and later with Saltwater Band. He dies in 2017 from liver and kidney damage linked to hepatitis B contracted in childhood.
