Gum Takes Tooth
Gum Takes Tooth are a London-based experimental and noise rock group active since 2009. The current line-up includes Jussi Brightmore, Thomas Fuglesang and Valentina Magaletti, and the group’s sound is centred on drum-triggered electronics, with rhythm and noise working together in a highly physical way. Their music sits within electronic, experimental, noise rock and psychedelic rock, and also draws on math rock and psych-rock ideas.
Recording history
The group’s debut album, Silent Cenotaph, appears in 2011 on Tigertrap Records. It is followed by Mirrors Fold in 2014 and Arrow in 2019. Across these releases, the band develops a style built from percussion-led structures, manipulated electronics and dense, forceful textures.
Members and related projects
Jussi Brightmore handles electronics and vocals. He is from the UK and has also played in 100 Pets and I’m Being Good. Thomas Fuglesang plays drums and percussion; he is originally from Norway and is also involved with Luminous Bodies, Melting Hand and Wart Biter. Valentina Magaletti is also a member of the group.
Style
The band is known for a confrontational, unclassifiable approach that combines circular drum patterns, electronic manipulation and heavy psychedelic and noise elements. Their music is described through references to sound system culture, doom and altered-state dance music, but it remains rooted in the interaction between live percussion and electronics.
