Groundation
Groundation is a reggae group from Rohnert Park, California, active since 1998. The band is formed by Harrison Stafford, “Iron” Ryan Newman and Marcus Urani, who meet while studying in the jazz programme at Sonoma State University. Its music combines roots reggae, dub and jazz, with a strong emphasis on live improvisation and instrumental interaction.
Style and approach
The group’s sound draws on the lyrical focus of roots reggae, the progressive musicianship of funk and jazz fusion, and dub-influenced production. Its line-up develops a dense ensemble style built around horns, polyrhythms and harmony vocals. Performances are known for extended improvisation and a communal atmosphere.
Name and background
The name Groundation comes from the Rastafarian term “grounation”, referring to gatherings centred on music, shared vibration and the use of positive energy in support of social change. The band has toured widely across several continents and countries.
