Gross Magic
Gross Magic is the recording project of Sam McGarrigle, a musician from the United Kingdom who begins releasing lo-fi fuzz pop songs in late 2010. Early demos attract attention online and draw comparisons with lo-fi revival and 1990s indie-nostalgia acts such as Wavves and Yuck. The music is also compared with Nirvana, Beck’s Mellow Gold period, and a four-track version of the orchestral pop of Electric Light Orchestra.
Early releases and live line-up
When the project starts to play live, McGarrigle brings in three old friends to form a performance line-up. The five-song EP Teen Jamz is released on Sounds of Sweet Nothing and later licensed by Fat Possum. The group then tours heavily in support of the release.
Style
The project is associated with garage rock, indie rock, lo-fi, indie pop and fuzz pop, and its early songwriting is described as being rooted in a bedroom-pop approach.
