Green Nuns Of The Revolution

Green Nuns Of The Revolution are a UK psychedelic trance group active from 1994, associated with goa trance and psytrance, with a full-on acid drenched psychedelic trance sound. The group consists of Matt Coldrick, Neil Cowley, Dick Trevor and Sev Burden.

Background

The project is built around Dick Trevor, Neil Cowley and Matt Coldrick, with Sev Burden also listed as a member. Matt Coldrick also works as a session guitarist for Gabrielle, and Neil Cowley plays keyboards for the Brand New Heavies.

Name and early identity

The name Green Nuns Of The Revolution is said to possibly refer to Muammar al-Qaddafi’s personal guards. Their album title was originally intended to be Black & White & Green All Over.

Recorded work

Their album Rock Bitch Mafia, issued on Flying Rhino, draws attention for combining goa trance with cheeky electro, the punkish attitude associated with The Prodigy, the euphoric techno drive of Underworld, and the dry sense of humour linked to Eat Static. It also uses deadpan spoken samples, including the line: “thenceforth I bopped ’til daybreak in single-minded pursuit of the groove.”

Reception

Rock Bitch Mafia attracts radio support from DJs including John Peel and Annie Nightingale, but it does not break through to mainstream attention and remains an obscure classic within the style.
