Grass Mountain Hobos

Grass Mountain Hobos are a group from Prince Edward Island. They form around a stage show and repertoire that draw on older traditions of live entertainment, with a presentation that recalls travelling salesmen, carnival acts, farms, taverns and circus settings.

Style and instrumentation

The band uses two acoustic guitars, a banjo, mandolin, doghouse bass and fiddle. Six vocalists contribute to the group’s sound, which combines swing, bluegrass, blues and folk. Their performances are described as moving with a strong rhythmic drive, with stomping, audience participation and singing playing a major part.

History

The group begins in June 2007, when they enter the showcase at the Rollo Bay Old-Time Music Festival in Prince Edward Island in order to get free festival tickets. They win the fan choice award and are then invited to play again the following night for payment. After that weekend, they continue busking, travelling and performing across Canada.

Recording career and recognition

Their first album, The Grass Mountain Hobos, wins three PEI Music Awards in 2009 and the East Coast Music Association’s Bluegrass Album of the Year award. The group is also associated with constant touring and festival performances across Canada.
