Grant Nelson

Grant Nelson is a London-based DJ, producer and remixer associated with house, deep house, funky house and UK garage. Born in 1971, he works under several names and has a long-running role in the development of UK garage and related club styles.

Early work and labels

Nelson begins releasing music on his Nice 'n' Ripe label in the early 1990s, where his club records help shape the sound that becomes known as UK garage. His early productions contribute to what is first referred to as the “Sunday Scene” before the style evolves into UK garage. He also works as Wishdokta from 1990 to 1993, making hardcore and drum and bass for the London label Kickin Records.

Bump & Flex and 2-step garage

In 1997, Nelson starts using the alias Bump & Flex and moves into UK 2-step production. Under this name, he delivers a number of important records in the scene, including a version of James Brown’s “Funk On Ah Roll”.

House music and Swing City Records

Nelson remains rooted in house music throughout his career. He continues to release through Swing City Records, a label associated with his ongoing house output, and the label is listed among his key affiliations alongside Nice 'N' Ripe and Rise 'n' Shine.

He is also linked to a number of other names and projects, including Dangerous Liaison, 24Hour Experience, Xenophobia, Ambassadors of Swing, G.O.D., N’n’G, M-Gee, 2 Taboo, Dusk Til Dawn and Intergration.
