Gonoreas

Gonoreas is a Swiss heavy metal band that forms in spring 1994 in a first line-up built around Martin Zürcher on bass and Denis Alibasic on rhythm guitar. The group later adds Damir Eskic on guitar, Jonas Lotar on drums and Gilberto Méndez on vocals, and begins playing mostly original material, with occasional covers. In its early years the band performs widely on smaller and larger stages, and its sound develops through frequent live work into a more focused heavy metal style.

The band’s early history includes several line-up changes and periods of interruption. In 1997 singer Gilberto leaves, and the group splits up for a time. Jonas and Damir play in an alternative rock band before Gilberto returns in 1998, at which point Gonoreas reform with Miriam Zehnder as rhythm guitarist. That revived period ends in 2000 when the band and Gilberto part ways again.

In 2001 the group issues its first notable release, the maxi-CD Soul Cries Out, and changes its name from The Gonorrheas to Gonoreas. By early 2002 Gilberto returns as singer, replacing Steven, and the line-up stabilises. From then on the band develops a stronger profile, touring abroad, selling more CDs across Switzerland, drawing larger concert audiences and building a loyal following.

Style and development

Gonoreas begins with a broad metal and rock approach, but gradually strips away mixed stylistic elements and concentrates on heavy metal. The band’s early live activity and contest appearances help shape that direction, and its later material reflects a firmer commitment to rock and heavy metal. The group remains active in a near-stable line-up and works to spread its sound beyond Switzerland.
