Goldstar

Goldstar are a drum and bass act formed in mid-December 2012 by Lee Morris, Geoff Smith, David Gane and Charlie Kay. The group comes together through a series of chance collaborations and shared recording projects, then develops a joint approach to making music after meeting and finding common ground in their aims for their individual careers.

Style and approach

Their work is described around the idea of “Stadium Dance”, combining dance production with live instruments, large choruses and a set built for festival settings. Lee Morris provides the lead vocal element, and the project places emphasis on a live show rather than studio recording alone.

Releases and early activity

After around three months of writing and recording, Goldstar release their debut mixtape. The first upload attracts thousands of plays, radio attention, a place in a Best of British podcast spotlight and requests from Japan. Three months later they upload a second mixtape, which also marks the debut of their live show.

Live work and recognition

Their early live appearances lead to bookings at Islington Academy, Jamm, where they support Alt-J, and Lodestar Festival. Their track “Landslide” is named BBC 1Xtra Introducing Track of the Week in August 2011.

Previous work

Before Goldstar, two of the members perform in Pocket Lips. That act reaches number 8 in the dance charts in 2010, has songs featured on The Jay Leno Show in the United States, and tours with Pendulum, Hadouken, Mr Hudson, Jessie J and Tinie Tempah.
