Golden Teacher

Golden Teacher is a UK group that forms in Glasgow, emerging from the city’s DIY music scene and working out of Green Door studio. The lineup centres on Laurie Pitt and Oliver Pitt, brothers who handle drums and percussion, alongside American members Richard McMaster and Sam Bellacosa on electronics, Charles Lavenac on vocals, and Cassie Ojay on vocals. Laurie Pitt and Oliver Pitt previously play in the noise punk trio Ultimate Thrush. McMaster and Bellacosa come from the all-analogue house duo Silk Cut, Lavenac is associated with the noise rock group Blue Sabbath Black Fiji, and Ojay also performs in the duo LAPS.

The group releases music on Optimo Music and begins that run with the 2013 EP Bells From The Deep End. They later issue their debut album, No Luscious Life, in 2017. Their sound draws together elements of house, dub, EBM and indie, with a heavy focus on rhythm, electronics and voice.

Golden Teacher’s music is described through references to Arthur Russell’s Dinosaur L, Bobby O, K Alexi Shelby, Liaisons Dangereuses, Imagination, voodoo drummers and Sly & Robbie, placing the group in a lineage of dance music, post-punk and rhythmic experimentalism.
