GoGo Penguin

GoGo Penguin is a jazz trio from Manchester, England, active since 2009. The group’s current lineup includes pianist Chris Illingworth, bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner, and the wider membership also includes Grant Russell and Jon Scott.

Sound and influences

The band works as a unit in composing and performing, combining minimalist piano patterns, breakbeats, strong bass lines, drumming shaped by electronica and sharp, anthem-like riffs. Their music draws on a wide range of influences, including Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, Debussy, Shostakovich and Massive Attack, as well as EST. Their listed genres include electronica, jazz, jazz fusion, nu jazz and post-rock.

Releases and recognition

Their debut album, Fanfares, is released on Manchester label Gondwana Records. It receives strong reviews, support from Mike Chadwick and Gilles Peterson, and a nomination for best jazz album at the World Wide Awards. Their follow-up v2.0 follows the departure of founding member Grant Russell, after Nick Blacka joins in late 2012. Blacka has previously played in an earlier trio with Illingworth, and his arrival brings a tighter sense of cohesion to the group’s sound.

Live reputation

GoGo Penguin is known as a striking live act, with a sound that develops from their blend of classical and electronic influences into a distinctive style associated with contemporary UK jazz.
