Goatwhore

Goatwhore is a black metal, blackened death metal, death metal and metal group from New Orleans, United States. The band forms in 1997 and is active from then to the present.

Formation and early line-up

The group begins as a side project in 1996/97 when Sammy Duet, formerly of Acid Bath and Crowbar, and Zak Nolan, later replaced by Zack Simmons, jam together while Acid Bath is on break. They record four-track demos and, after Acid Bath ends in 1997 following the loss of bassist Audie Pitre, they put more focus on the project, which is then known as Kilgore. The band becomes a four-piece with the addition of Ben Falgoust of Soilent Green and Pat Bruders.

Style and releases

Goatwhore’s 2000 debut, The Eclipse of the Ages Into Black, explores old-school satanic black metal in a way that draws on Bathory and Venom. The 2003 release Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun moves into darker and less conventional territory, with a more structured, textured approach and slower passages on tracks such as “As The Sun Turns To Ash” and “Fires of the Judas Blood.” The album also features the vocal interplay of Falgoust and Duet. In 2006, A Haunting Curse appears on Metal Blade and presents a clearer blackened death metal style. Carving Out The Eyes Of God follows in 2009.

Label history

After Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun, Goatwhore moves to Metal Blade Records, which becomes its label home.

The group includes Sammy Pierre Duet, Ben Falgoust, Zack Simmons, Sam Paulicelli, James Harvey and Robert Coleman.
