Girl and Girl

Girl and Girl are an Australian four-piece rock band from Brisbane. The group is formed by Kai James on lead vocals, Jayden Williams on lead guitar and Aunt Liss, also known as Melissa James, on drums, with Fraser Bell later joining on bass guitar.

Style and line-up

The band plays garage rock with indie rock and indie influences. Their music is described as built around strong hooks and a mix of energy and emotional intensity. The group’s live performances are noted for the contrast between Kai James’s stage presence and Liss’s long drumming background, with Liss bringing 37 years of drumming experience to the band.

Career

Girl and Girl win the inaugural Gold Coast Music Prize and go on to become one of the notable acts at Australia’s 2022 BIGSOUND music conference. They support Dry Cleaning on a national Australian tour before playing their first European tour, which includes showcase dates at The Great Escape, support shows with Blondshell, and an appearance at Wide Awake Festival in London.

Recordings and radio support

Their Divorce EP is named 4ZZZ’s Album of the Week and receives radio support across Australia, including playlists on RTRFM Soundscape, 2SER, Edge Radio and RRR Soundscape in Melbourne. In the United States, “Dance Now” appears on non-commercial radio playlists, reaches number 71 on the college radio charts, and gets first plays on Matt Wilkinson’s Apple Music show and London’s Reprazent Radio.

Label and debut album

Girl and Girl sign to Sub Pop in 2023. Their debut album is released in 2024. The band is also listed with Girl and Girl as a label.
