Girl Afraid
Girl Afraid is an indie pop group from the USA. The name also refers to an English rock group from Berkshire, England, but the English band is described as a separate act from Windsor with a hardcore-pop sound.
English band history
The Berkshire group forms when members who first meet while they are at high school have already played in other local bands, including Aussie Roadster and Naked in Black. Naked in Black earns local attention with the debut EP Tell Everyone What You Saw Tonight. When both earlier bands split in 2008, the musicians come together in Girl Afraid and spend a summer writing songs for their first release, a live download-only set called Hi, We’re a Band.
Before the group records a formal demo, it builds a wider following through Myspace Music and YouTube videos. This leads to a near sold-out first show in London and strong audiences at later dates. The band then records an acoustic demo that becomes a recommended download on Last.fm.
Recordings and releases
The band enters the studio in February to record new songs, which it streams on its Myspace and Last.fm profiles in early March. Its first official single is Five Weeks In Nebraska, issued as a worldwide release.
Line-up and style
The English Girl Afraid is described as a quintet with male vocals. It is also referred to as playing hardcore-pop and being active after its formation from the split of its earlier projects.
