Gill Landry

Gill Landry is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Lake Charles, Louisiana, born in 1975. He also performs under the stage name Frank Lemon. His work is associated with bluegrass and progressive bluegrass, and he is also linked with alt-country, folk, folk noir and southern gothic.

Career

Landry begins performing as a busker on the streets of New Orleans, where he forms the Kitchen Syncopators under the name Frank Lemon. He draws on older country blues, jazz and songster music from the 1920s and 1930s that he hears around the city. He later plays banjo and steel guitar with Old Crow Medicine Show, where he is a former member.

Debut album

His debut album is The Ballad of Lawless Soirez, issued in 2007. The songs on the record focus on loss, dashed dreams, violence, drink, graveyards and wandering life, and present narrative scenes that move between rural settings and decayed urban streets. The album is described as working with images of the French Quarter, New Orleans bars, Les Halles, whisky-fuelled nights, murder, ravens and hymns, framing the material as a dark American storytelling cycle.

Style

Landry’s writing is rooted in story songs and often treats the road, drink, death and spiritual imagery as central themes. His songs are presented as part of a noir-like Southern gothic tradition rather than conventional mainstream country.
