Gilbert

Gilbert is the performing name of Matthew Gilbert Linley, a composer and musician active in London. He is also described as Gilbert Linley, and the name is associated with work that crosses between folktronica, electronica, classical music, dream pop and spoken word. Another artist using the name is Austrian Schlager singer Gilbert Soukopf, born in Innsbruck in 1959.

Albums and projects

Gilbert completes a debut album in 2007, titled Gilbert, which receives strong radio support and is issued on Shifty Disco Records. In 2010 he completes another album, Wahoola!. In 2014 he releases an album under the name AztecCormorant. In 2016 he works with Mark Peters on Salt Rush, released on the Pedigree Cuts label.

Style and instrumentation

His music is characterised by dense, layered arrangements and an eclectic approach. It combines vintage analogue synthesisers and organs with orchestral instruments such as harp, celeste and strings. In later work, vocals by Maud Waret feature more prominently.

Collaborations and live work

Linley also plays drums in Engineers alongside Mark Peters and Ulrich Schnauss. His music is performed live across the UK by a five-piece group using a range of instruments. Notable performances include sets at the 2007 Green Man Festival, the 2008 Loop Festival and Southbank Udderbelly in 2009. He also supports Mice Parade in October 2010.
