George Murphy

George Murphy is a singer from the United Kingdom whose work is associated with acoustic and folk-influenced material. He comes to public attention through his appearance on the television talent show You're A Star, where he is noted for standing out by performing as himself rather than following the usual talent-show style. He sings and performs on vocals.

Recording career

After his television exposure, Murphy signs a recording deal with Sony Ireland and records his debut album, Dreamed a Dream, at Amberville Studios in Antrim with producer Phil Coulter. The album contains 12 tracks and draws on a mix of traditional and contemporary material, including Irish songs such as Raglan Road and Dublin In the Rare Auld Times, as well as Working Class Hero and Joe Hill. It also includes new songs written by John Spillane and Jack, a song Murphy writes himself.

Singles and chart success

The first single from the album, The Moon Going Home, reaches number 2 in the charts before later moving to number 1. The album is described as moving towards multi-platinum status.

Performances and collaborations

Murphy performs in Carlow after leaving the talent show and later appears with acts including The Dubliners, Paddy Casey and Aslan. He also sings at Lansdowne Road for both the rugby and soccer teams. He meets Bill Clinton as part of his wider public profile.
