George Eliot

George Eliot is the pen name of Mary Anne Evans, also given as Mary Ann and Marian Evans. She is an English novelist from Nuneaton, in the United Kingdom, born in 1819 and dying in 1880. She is one of the leading writers of the Victorian era.

Her novels are largely set in provincial England and are noted for their realism and psychological insight. She uses a male pen name so that her work is taken seriously. She also wants to avoid being treated as only a writer of romances, and may also use the name to shield her private life from public scrutiny, including the relationship with the married George Henry Lewes.
