Genitorturers

Genitorturers are an industrial metal band from Orlando, United States, active since 1991. Their music combines industrial metal and industrial rock with influences from 1990s hardcore punk and electronic music. The group also describes itself as “The World’s Sexiest Rock Band”.

History and formation

The band forms in Orlando, Florida, around singer Gen, who founds the project while studying pre-med. It first performs in late 1986 under the name The Festering Genitorturers, with Marisa on vocals, Yvonne on guitar, Gen on bass, Larry on guitar and Mike on drums. The name later shortens to The Genitorturers. Through the 1990s, the group goes through several line-up changes while developing in the Florida hardcore scene alongside acts such as Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids.

In 1993, IRS Records owner Miles Copeland III sends assistant Nick Turner to see the band perform. The show and the band’s mixture of hardcore punk, metal and industrial electronics lead to a record contract. After that, the group records 120 Days of Genitorture. Following the album, David Vincent, bassist and vocalist of Morbid Angel and Gen’s husband, joins on bass after leaving Morbid Angel in 1995 following Domination.

Releases and media appearances

The band’s studio albums are 120 Days of Genitorture (1993), Sin City (1998) and Blackheart Revolution (2009). It also releases the remix album Machine Love (2000) and the EP Flesh is the Law (2002). Machine Love includes a cover of Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself” and is produced by Dave Ogilvie and Scott Humphrey, who also produces for Rob Zombie.

Live work and later activity

Genitorturers tours widely in the United States, Japan and Europe, and becomes known for pornographic content and BDSM-themed live shows. This leads to television appearances including VH1, Fox News, Hard Copy, HBO’s Real Sex and Playboy TV’s Sexcetera. In 2004, the band appears in a 12-page spread in Hustler, which describes it as “the world’s sexiest band”.

The group releases the live DVD Live in Sin in 2007. It tours Australia with Dead Inside the Chrysalis in 2006, and in 2014 marks more than 20 years since the release of its debut album with the “20 Years of Depravity” tour.
