Genesis Owusu is the performing name of Kofi Owusu-Ansah, a Ghanaian-Australian singer born in 1998. He is from Ngambri/Canberra and is born in Ghana before moving to Australia at the age of two. He is the brother of Citizen Kay.

Style and sound

Owusu’s music draws on soul, funk, rap and pop. He is associated with alternative hip hop, alternative R&B, funk, hip hop, pop and R&B.

Career

His debut studio album, Smiling with No Teeth, is released in 2021. The album is built from material recorded during sessions that produce around 60 hours of music, with songs selected for the record because they fit a specific narrative. He also releases the single “Same Thing”, which is recorded during those sessions and has a music video directed by Byron Spencer.

Before his wider profile develops, his career is mostly confined to Australia. In July 2019, he performs as an opening act at 5 Seconds of Summer’s sold-out benefit concert in Sydney. His track “WUTD” is featured in a Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 commercial in October 2019, and “Sideways” receives national rotation on Triple J.
