Gene

Gene is a British indie rock quartet from London, active from 1993 to 2004. The band is made up of Martin Rossiter, Matt James, Kevin Miles and Steve Mason. Rossiter forms the centre of the group as lead singer, while also playing keyboards; James plays drums, Miles plays bass and Mason plays guitar.

The band rises to prominence in the mid-1990s and is usually labelled as part of Britpop, although its music draws on a wider range of British guitar-pop and punk influences. Their sound is often compared with The Smiths because of Rossiter’s singing style, but Gene’s material also connects with artists such as The Jam, Small Faces, The Style Council and The Clash.

Gene forms in London in 1993 and disbands in 2004. It is regarded as a UK alternative rock quartet with a place in the broader 1990s British indie and Britpop scene.
