Gena

Gena is a band based in St. Petersburg, Russia, that begins in mid-June 2015 as a drone project led by Herbert Liskin. It develops into a larger group with a changing, collaborative lineup drawn from the St. Petersburg scene. The band includes members from Sonic Death, KIROV, Antethic and Windshear, with guest contributions from artists associated with Garlic Kings and Brigitte Bardo.

The project starts with a focus on drone music, then expands into an atmospheric sound with a broad personnel base. Its name comes from an offhand joke among Herbert Liskin’s friends during the drone phase, when they suggest naming it after themselves in a simpler form. The name later becomes Latinised as Gena, while the group also refers to the project informally as “Zhena” during work.

Gena is associated with doomgaze, shoegaze, post-metal, R&B and neo-soul.
