Gemma Mewse is a British singer and songwriter associated with pop and rock-inflected music. She is described as a soulfully voiced, edgy performer whose material sits between mainstream pop and a rougher British rock sound, with comparisons made to artists such as Ellie Goulding, Britney Spears and Gwen Stefani.
Background and early performance work
Mewse is based in Britain and is known for performing live from a young age. Her experience includes work in musical theatre, appearances at the Royal Variety Performance, and performances at the Camden Crawl. She begins performing and gigging around London from October 2009, where she debuts hard-hitting, socially aware pop-rock songs.
Songwriting and recording
From 2009 onward, Mewse writes with a range of songwriters while continuing to perform new material. In April 2010 she starts writing her debut album with Australian producer and songwriter Chris James Ryan. Ryan is credited with extensive album experience, and the collaboration is described as helping Mewse develop her songwriting and establish a sound distinct from formulaic pop.
She records the album in Canada with Ryan and her high-energy band, and the songs are presented as lyrically direct and rooted in real-life experience. Her debut album is being completed for release in early 2011, and by September 2010 she is publicly marking the making of the record.
Style
Her music is described as a gutsy, rock-tinged form of pop with a strong vocal delivery. The material is framed as “femme-fronted” pop with British grit, combining commercial pop structure with a more forceful edge.
