Garden City Movement

Garden City Movement is a Tel Aviv, Israel-based group active since 2013. The project consists of Roee Avital and Yoni Sharoni, with a third member, Johnny, who is also a music journalist, radio DJ and nightlife figure. The group is associated with chillwave, electronic, indie pop and trip hop, and its sound draws on the members’ different cultural backgrounds.

Background and early releases

Before forming Garden City Movement, Joe and Roi are part of Lorena B. The group signs to BLDG5 Records and releases the four-track Entertainment EP worldwide in 2013. The EP draws attention for its mix of electronic production and vocal-led songs, with tracks such as “Casa Mila” and “Move On” receiving coverage in music publications.

Performances and reception

Garden City Movement performs with Disclosure, Bondax, Blonde Redhead and Apparat. Johnny also plays alongside artists including Floating Points, Koreless and Oneman. The group’s releases are described through a range of electronic styles, from slower, hypnotic beats to more club-oriented tracks. The second EP follows after Entertainment, alongside support shows for Cults and Sohn, a debut Boiler Room live performance, and festival appearances in Europe.
