Gaiser

Gaiser is the recording name of German electronic producer Jon Gaiser. He comes from Grand Rapids and develops minimal techno and techno within the Minus circle, with an approach built on detailed rhythm, subtle melodic movement and changes in atmosphere.

Early years

He grows up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he spends his teenage weekends going to Detroit, attending gigs and spending time with friends. He first plays in punk bands as a drummer, but his direction changes at around 14 after hearing a techno party set by Richie Hawtin. He is struck by the sound and starts working out how it is made. After that, he leaves the bands and begins collecting drum machines, synthesisers and effects units.

He also learns piano and symphonic percussion, which he later draws on in his production style. After finishing high school, he moves to Detroit.

Detroit, Minus and recording work

In Detroit, he spends time programming machines, building studio skills and searching through vinyl at Record Time. Plus 8 has an office in the same building, where he meets Tim Price, Clark Warner and others, and he becomes part of the Minus family.

His releases include a run of Minus EPs such as And Answer, Neural Block and Eye Contact, followed by his debut album Blank Fade. These recordings are described through their precise drum patterns, rhythmic drive, delicate melodies and shifts in mood rather than through self-contained song structures.

Style and performance

Gaiser’s music is characterised by energetic percussion and careful sonic detail. His work is presented as minimalist sound construction rather than overt display, with a balance between force and refinement. He is also described as a live performer who reacts to the audience and adapts his set to the room’s atmosphere.

Later base and touring

He later lives in Berlin and tours across Europe, the United States and Japan. He also performs with the Minus crew on the Contakt global tour in Detroit, linking back to the city that helped shape his early interest in techno.
