Gabriel Prokofiev
Gabriel Prokofiev is a Russian-British composer and DJ from London, working in classical music, electronica and experimental forms. He is based in England and also works as a record producer.
Background and family
He is born in 1975 to an English mother and the Russian artist Oleg Prokofiev. He is also the grandson of Sergei Prokofiev.
Education and early work
He studies composition at Birmingham University and York University. Before moving into classical composition, he works in electronica and garage music.
Nonclassical and production work
In 2003, he founds the independent record label Nonclassical. Under the name Medasyn, he is one of the producers on Lady Sovereign’s album Public Warning.
Composition career
He begins writing classical music in 2004 with a string quartet for the Elysian Quartet. One of his best-known works is Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra, which is performed at the BBC Proms in August 2011 by DJ Switch and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski.
