Gabriel Minnikin

Gabriel Minnikin is a Halifax-based Nova Scotia indie musician, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He works in song as a solo artist and in collaboration with other musicians, and his music is rooted in country, with a raw, textured sound and a strong emphasis on voice, narrative and atmosphere.

Career

Minnikin has been active since the 1990s. He develops his songwriting through work with different bands and projects, while keeping a consistent focus on songs that combine emotional detail, wry humour and a sense of lived experience. His material often uses vivid images and stories, moving between reflective and more unsettled moods.

He first develops his style with the country outfit The Guthries, where he works on the albums Off Windmill and The Guthries. He then releases his solo debut, Hard Feelings, followed by Wandering Midnight and Parakeets with Parasols. The last of these is arranged with full orchestration and a wide range of instruments, while still leaving room for quieter, more restrained passages.

Collaborations and live work

Minnikin performs and tours with a wide range of artists, including First Aid Kit, Justin Townes Earle, The Handsome Family and Caitlin Rose. He also performs with his sister Ruth Minnikin in The Minnikins, supporting Jools Holland and Jose Gonzalez. He appears live as a solo performer and with his band The Fast Country, and also acts as master of ceremonies at shows.

Labels and associated projects

His releases appear across different projects, and he is associated with Fruits de Mer Records. Another named act connected to him is Ruth Minnikin & Her Bandwagon.
