FuntCase
FuntCase is the stage name of James Hazell, a Bournemouth-born English producer and DJ who works in dubstep, drum and bass and electronic music. Born in 1986, he is known for performing in a signature mask.
Early development
Hazell first gets into music through jamming with schoolmates. His drumming style draws on death metal, while his wider listening includes happy hardcore and jungle. He also grows up with Helter Skelter and Dreamscape mixtapes. After hearing Twisted Individual’s “Bandwagon Blues”, he focuses on drum and bass production.
First releases and aliases
He starts to gain attention by sending tracks to drum and bass radio stations. Under the alias DJ Dose, he makes his first release in 2007. In 2009 he begins producing dubstep, applying drum and bass layering techniques to that sound. His track “Gorilla Flex”, originally made as a joke, becomes well received and leads to his first dubstep vinyl release on 4:20 Records. “Make Our Day” is then signed to the same label. He also releases music as Haze.
Career and label work
In 2010, FuntCase is signed to Circus Records, the label run by Flux Pavilion and Doctor P. He releases extensively through the 2010s with the Circus Records roster. In 2020, he launches DPMO as his own brand and label. He is associated with DPMO as a label and with the broader dubstep scene.
