Fuad is the stage name of Fuad al Muqtadir, a Bangladeshi musician and composer from Sylhet, Bangladesh, born in 1980. He is also known as New York Fuad. His work is associated with pop and with a style that combines different genres and languages.

Career

Fuad leaves Bangladesh for the United States in 1988 and starts junior high school there. He remains active in music on and off before forming the band Zefyr in 1993 with Richard Modhu, Himel, Shumon and Fred. Zefyr records several tracks and releases the albums Maya 1 and Maya 2 before disbanding in 1999. The albums become popular within Bangladeshi communities in New York.

Solo releases and collaborations

Fuad’s first record is Re/Evolution, made with help from Sohel Aziz, the keyboardist from Obscure. The album features 14 tracks and brings together mainstream and underground musicians. It includes versions and originals such as Litu’s “Sylhoti”, Anila Naz Chowdhury’s “Jhilmil”, Armeen’s “Bhromor Koiyo”, and the remixed “Mon Chaile Mon”, all of which become hits.

He later releases Variation No. 25 in 2006, which is re-released later that year as Variation No. 25.2 by G-Series and Aarshee with two additional songs. Tracks including Poonam’s “Nobina”, Rajib/Fuad’s “Nitol Paye”, and Bappa Mazumder’s “Kono Asroy” become widely popular.

In 2007, Fuad releases Bonno on G-Series. The album includes “Tor Jonno Ami Bonno” by Upol, “Bonno Rap” by Fuad and Bishop, “Junglee” by Fuad, “Da Dushto Number”, “Nitol Paye” in a live version, and Mila’s “Shukno Patar Nupur”. “Tor Jonno Ami Bonno” becomes a golden hit, and “Nitol Paye” is especially associated with radio play.

Other albums and radio work

Fuad also works on Sumon and Anila’s Ekhon Ami and Topu’s Bondhu Bhabo Ki?. In 2008 he releases Kromannoy, a feature release with various artists, and later that year he issues Fuad Featuring Kona. He also releases Mila’s Re Defined in 2009. Alongside recording work, he presents a programme called “Fuad Live Season-2” on Radio Foorti on Saturdays at 8 PM.

Style

Fuad is known for mixing musical genres and languages in his productions. His releases include collaborations with a wide range of Bangladeshi singers and musicians, and his name is closely linked with both solo compilations and artist-feature albums.
