Fryars

Fryars is the London-based project of Benjamin Garrett from the United Kingdom. His music sits within classic pop and rock, with connections to indie pop, indie, electronic and singer-songwriter work.

Early releases and debut album

Garrett’s first commercial release is the ides, which appears in 2007. The following year he forms frYarcorp, and in 2009 he releases the debut album Dark Young Hearts. The album is co-produced with Luke Smith, Paul Butler and Stephen Hague.

Dark Young Hearts includes the singles Visitors, which features Dave Gahan on backing vocals, and Olive Eyes.

Later singles and label changes

In 2013, Love So Cold and In my arms are released by Warner. The following year, Cool like me and Radio PWR are issued through Fiction Records and Polydor.

Power

Work on Power begins in 2010, but the album is delayed for several years because of problems with his former label 679 and a merger involving Warner and Access Industries. Warner later frees Garrett from his contract and returns the album to him, and Power is finally released in November 2014.

The album is produced by Luke Smith and Rodaidh McDonald, who has also worked with The xx, How To Dress Well and Savages. It is mixed by Jimmy Douglass and includes Prettiest Ones Fly Highest and The Power. The album’s sixteen tracks are linked by a script written specifically for the record.

Other collaborations

Garrett also writes two tracks for Lily Allen’s 2014 album Sheezus. He appears on Rae Morris’ single Cold as Fryars.
