Frontierer

Frontierer is a Scottish mathcore band from Edinburgh, active since 2011. The group centres on guitarist and primary songwriter Pedram Valiani and vocalist Chad Kapper, and also includes Dan Stevenson on guitar, Calum Craig on bass and Owen Hughes on drums. It begins as a bedroom project involving Valiani and Kapper before growing into a touring ensemble.

Style and sound

Frontierer works across mathcore, metalcore, djent, metal and noise, with a focus on extreme metal, chaotic rhythms, programmed percussion, heavily distorted production and abrasive vocals. Their music also incorporates electronic textures and glitch elements.

Releases

The band’s debut release is The Collapse (2013), which establishes its sample-heavy and abrasive approach. Orange Mathematics follows in 2015 and brings a denser, more experimental sound; it also appears in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the best metal albums. Unloved arrives in 2018 and pushes the band’s sound towards greater ferocity and extremity. Oxidized is released in 2021 and is marked by ambitious scale and layered production. Frontierer also releases the EP THE SKULL BURNED WEARING HELL LIKE A LIFE VEST AS THE NIGHT WEPT.

Distribution

The band’s releases are largely independent and circulate through Bandcamp and other DIY channels.
