Freeland

Freeland is a group from the United States, with Boz Metzdorf and Tommy Wiggins as members. It is also the name used by Adam Freeland, a UK-based DJ and producer associated with nu skool breaks and breakbeat, who works as a solo DJ under his full name and has released material as Freeland. His label Marine Parade is based in Brighton.

Background and related projects

Adam Freeland forms one half of Tsunami One with Kevin Beber. He is also linked with nights such as Friction, which move from underground status into wider industry attention as breakbeat develops in the mid-1990s. By 1997 he is established on the global DJ circuit, with support from artists including Sasha, Carl Cox and the Chemical Brothers.

Releases and collaborations

Under the Freeland name, he releases the mix albums Tectonics, On Tour, a FabricLive mix and Back To Mine. His debut artist album, Now and Them, draws on punk, hip hop, electro, dub, reggae and rock. His remix of Sarah Vaughan’s Fever receives a Grammy nomination, and his personally requested mix of The Doors’ Hello, I Love You also attracts critical attention.

Label work

Marine Parade, Freeland’s label, is described as an established and recognised force in dance music.
